Cost of Oil Change

You never really question the cost of an oil change until you need to get one.  Then you start wondering why the prices are so much different everywhere you look.  Well, that is if you can actually find the prices.  Most companies seem to hide the actual cost of an oil change from you.  Usually when you find an oil change coupon, they will say how much you are saving and not how much the final price actually is.

There are actually a lot of factors that go into how much an oil change will cost.  You have to take into consideration the type of oil you are getting, any discounts you are receiving, whether or not you are getting  a new filter and also the area you are in.

Different Type of Oil Changes

Prices of differerent oil changes will vary.  Like we have gone over plenty on this site, the main types of oil change are conventional (basic), high mileage, synthetic blend and synthetic.  The prices of each go up in the order that they are listed above.

As for a conventional oil change, these are the cheapest.  You can get a really cheap oil change if you get a basic change using a generic motor oil.  Sometimes you can get a $10 oil change like this, but you should be looking for a good brand like Mobil, Valvoline or Castrol.  Those will cost anywhere from $15-$25 with a coupon or $20-$35 without.

Synthetic blend and high mileage oil changes will cost about the same.  Oftentimes, a high mileage oil change is done with a special synthetic blend meant for older cars with a lot of miles on them.  These oil changes should cost anywhere from $35-$50 with a coupon or $40-$65 without one.

Synthetic oil change prices are going to be the highest.  The actual cost of making the synthetic motor oil is what increases the price so much.  A lab has to create these lubricants from special chemicals to make a higher grade motor oil.  Synthetic oils will last a lot longer though, so you should take that into consideration when you have to choose.  The cost of a synthetic oil change should be anywhere from $45-$65 with synthetic oil change coupon up to $85 without a coupon.

Finding Oil Change Prices

It seems like most companies will hide the price of an oil change.  I have actually called some places like Jiffy Lube that said they won’t tell you the price over the phone.  You can use a few different resources still to find out how much a local oil change will cost.  You can head over to Yelp.com and look through reviews for prices from people that have visited locations in your area.

You can also check out the companies’ websites in your area.  Some companies like NTB and Sears advertise the final oil change prices on their websites.  A lot of other companies won’t do this because regionally prices are different and because franchised shops can charge different prices than the rest of the locations around the country.

Walmart Oil Change Price

Walmart is a good example of a site that won’t advertise how much an oil change costs in their stores.  There aren’t even any Walmart oil change coupons available to give you an idea.  Prices of a Walmart oil change seem to vary based on the location of the stores.  You can sometimes find out how much they will cost by searching Yahoo answer or going to Yelp for reviews.  Typically, the price of a conventional oil change will be somewhere around $30 at Walmart while the synthetic prices are somewhere around $70.

Fast Track Oil Change

Fast Track is a great Wisconsin based oil change company.  They are a small company, but have over 10 locations that are around to give a quick and reliable oil change to people in the area.

Locals seem to really like these shops.  Most of the locations receive high star ratings from Yelp along with some glowing reviews.  The Fast Track in Northridge Lakes seems to be the laggard, only getting 2 stars on the website.  It looks like most, if not all, of the other Fast Track oil change locations have at least 4 stars.

Platinum Oil Change Service

Fast Track has a fancy name for what is a basic oil change at most places.  They call it Platinum, Jiffy Lube calls it Signature Service, everybody has their own name for it.  The Platinum Service Oil Change here includes:

  • Inspect/Fill Transmission Fluid
  • Check Antifreeze/Coolant
  • Inspect/Fill Rear Differential Fluid
  • Check Air Filter
  • Inspect PCV Valve / Breather
  • Wash Windshield
  • Computerized Vehicle History
  • FREE REFILLS for 3 months or 3,000 miles
  • Check/Fill Windshield Solvent
  • Inspect/Fill Power Steering Fluid
  • Check Brake Fluid
  • Inspect/Fill Battery
  • Visual Inspection of Belts and Hoses
  • Check/Fill Tire Pressure
  • Check/Fill Transfer Case (4WD Only)
  • Check/Fill Front Differential (4WD Only)

You can get different grades of motor oil as well when you shop at Fast Track Lube.  All of these are Mobil oil changes.  The basic oil change comes with 5 qts. of Mobil Super® motor oil, high mileage with 5 qts. of Mobil Super® High Mileage motor oil, synthetic blend with 5 qts. of Mobil Super® synthetic blend motor oil and fully synthetic comes with 5 qts. of Mobil 1® Full synthetic motor oil.  All oil changes include a new oil filter and chassis lube.  Most of the time you can get in and out for 15-20 minutes, according to their website.

Fast Track Oil Change Price

Fast Lube does not advertise the price of an oil change on their website.  The Yelp reviews aren’t much of a help either.  You can try calling ahead to your local Fast Track to find out what they are charging.  Make sure you have the exact make and model of your car along with the type of oil you want to have replaced in your car.

5 Minute Oil Change Coupon

Spending just 5 minutes on an oil change is definitely an impressive feat.  It takes most places at least a half hour to do all of the work that is necessary to finish the job.  Even companies like Jiffy Lube and EZ Lube that have been around for a long time with huge business networks still take about 20 minutes to fully change your oil.

Take 5, a quick lube chain in the Southern United States, has figured out how to streamline the process so much that it takes just 5 minutes.  They are known for this quick and convenient service.

5 Minute Oil Change Locations

The majority of the oil change locations that Take 5 has to offer are found around the Southern belt of the US.  There are currently  25 locations in South Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.  Take 5 is quickly making an expansion effort into the Carolinas right now with locations in Rock Hill, South Carolina and Charlotte, North Carolina.  There are plans for new locations popping up in Mobile- Alabama, Laplace-Lousiana, Raleigh-North Carolina and Greensboro-North Carolina.

Take 5 Services

You can get more than just a quick oil change at Take 5.  They also offer several other maintenance services and minor repairs in their shops.  In order to keep the process running quickly, they don’t do many advanced jobs in their stores.  Mainly, you will get services like Transmission Fluid Exchange, Coolant Exchange, Nitro Tire Fill, Air Filter Replacement and Wiper Blade Replacements.

5 Minute Oil Change Coupons

You can find a lot of great deals at Take 5.  There are discounts and oil change coupons listed on their website.  The discounts are only applicable to each individual shop, so you cannot get a coupon for ever site in one spot.  What you can do, you can go to the locations section of the Take 5 website and find the closest Take 5’s to where you live or where you have your car.  Click on the link to the shop nearest you and you will get the coupons for oil changes and other services at that particular shop.

Oil Change Dallas

Dallas is in the middle of oil country.  Oil country of the United States at least.  Oil changes around the Dallas area can sometimes be cheaper than the rest of the country, but you still need to be on the lookout for the best oil change locations in Dallas to make sure you have the best mechanics doing the work for you.

When you have anybody perform any service on your car, you want to make sure that they are skilled, honest and price fair.  Thankfully, the internet makes it a lot easier to find reviews and prices for oil changes in areas all around the country, Texas included.

Oil Changes in Dallas

Precision Tune Auto Care

11632 N. Central Expy
Dallas, TX 75243
Neighborhood: North Dallas
(214) 352-8067

Precision has the best reviews on yelp for not only oil changes, but for an all around mechanic shop.  Yelp reviewers give them glowing reviews about how great the customer service was.  This is extremely important to a lot of people.  Lots of us have unfortunately dealt with the snobby mechanics that are just trying to sell you more services to take more of your money.  This does not seem to be the case at Precision Tune Auto Care of Dallas.

Find oil change coupons on their website.

Lucky Ducky Lube Center

10710 Audelia Rd
Dallas, TX 75238
Neighborhood: Northeast Dallas
(214) 553-9460

This is a great location that is small, but efficient.  They focus mainly on oil changes and car washes.  With this business model, they are able to keep the line moving so that you aren’t stuck waiting for the person ahead of you to get their car examined and fixed.  It works pretty much as a quick assembly line of oil changes and car washes.

Valvoline Instant Oil Change

2001 Abrams Rd
Dallas, TX 75214
Neighborhood: Lakewood
(214) 823-8300

There is a trend around the country where the majority of cities that have a VIOC location also has Valvoline listed as one of the top 10 oil change locations in the city.  Dallas is no exception.  Yelpers made this the number 3 oil change place in the city of Dallas.  According to the reviews on Yelp, there don’t appear to be pushy employees here.  They will offer their advice, but won’t push anything on you.

Oil Change Locations

When it comes time to get your car’s oil changed, it is important that you decide on the right place to get the job done.  There are a lot of oil change locations that perform shoddy work and don’t show you the fine print on the work until the job is over. You’re going to want to find the best place for an oil change so that you don’t get taken advantage of.

There are a lot of options.  Every city has multiple places that you can get your car maintained by a team of mechanics.  It becomes a matter of preference, trust and price when deciding on where you want to go with your car and your money.

Large Retailers

There are a number of retailers around the country that do a lot of work on cars.  These retailers will have automotive sections, usually in the back of the store, where you can get your oil changed, brakes replaced, tires installed and more.

Walmart

Did you know that the world’s largest retailer also does oil changes.  Not all, but many Walmarts have Walmart Tire & Lube Express departments attached to their stores.  These are usually off to the side or in the back near the tires section.

Sears

Sears Auto Centers aren’t always located on a Sears department store.  Actually, they aren’t even always on the same grounds as a Sears store.  However, there are Sears Auto Centers around the country that are dedicated to providing pretty much all preventative car maintenance, tire installations and plenty of minor repairs.

Pep Boys

A large auto parts store like this should have a mechanic on duty.  In fact, most Pep Boys locations have huge shops set up for performing almost any car repair or maintenance that you would need.  Since they have so many parts and materials on hand, you don’t have to worry about waiting for parts to get shipped in most of the time and you have a better chance of getting a good deal.

Quick Lube Stations

Jiffy Lube

Lots of people think of Jiff Lube first when oil changes come to mind.  They have nationally run commercials and discounts to remind us that they are everywhere.  A lot of peole don’t realize that Jiffy Lube is owned the the Shell Oil Company, who also owns and operates the Quaker State and Pennzoil lines of motor oil products.

Valvoline Instant Oil Change and Valvoline Express Care

The Valvoline company is owned by Ashland Inc.  Valvoline is a part of the Ashland Consumer Products division that makes some of the most well known motor oil.  Valvoline Express Care locations are all owned and operated by the Ashland Company.  Valvoline Instant Oil Change, on the other hand, is a franchise run company.  You can even find Valvoline Instant Oil Change (VIOC) locations in Southern California now since their largest franchisee purchased 100% stake in EZ Lube.

Oil Can Henry’s

This is a growing company that keeps their customers due to their traditional values.  The majority of Oil Can Henry’s locations can be found in Western and Mid-West United States.

Specialized Shops

Firestone and Goodyear

These are both competitors, but both of them have similar business models.  They make most of their money by selling and installing tires, but also provide a variety of services, like oil changes.  Often, you can get an oil change coupon that gets you a service with a free tire rotation since they are the experts on that.

Meineke Car Care Center

They used to be known as Meineke Discount Muffler Shops, but changed to Meineke Car Care so that they wouldn’t push anybody away looking for other services.  Meineke bought Econolube in 2006, giving them about 200 quick lube stations, but also the infrastructure of a quick oil change company.

Midas

This company really pigeon-holed themselves as a muffler company in the beginning when they were known as The Muffler Installation Dealers’ Associated Service.  The name eventually changed to Midas and they now advertise that they are auto service experts where you can get more than just your muffler worked on.

National Tire and Battery (NTB)

This company lists its two major expert areas just in their title.  They don’t make their own tires like Goodyear and Firestone, but they are experts on the installations and tire maintenance.  Ironically, NTB often has the cheapest oil changes among the competition in many cases.

Nissan Oil Change Coupons

Nissans are becoming one of the most loved and trusted cars in the United States.  These reliable vehicles have been such a strong competition against American brands as well as other foreign made cars that you see them anytime you are on the road.

Nissan owners also love their cars.  Most owners of newer Nissan cars are known to keep great care of their cars, getting them regularly maintained and keeping oil changes up to date.  There are a variety of choices with oil changes between types of oil and where you will take your Nissan to get it serviced.

Nissan Oil Change Locations

If you own a Nissan, you can take it pretty much anywhere for an oil change.  This really comes down to preference and also where you can find the best deal.  If you find a really cheap oil change somewhere, you should check out recommendations from friends as well as Yelp to see if the cheap deal is actually worth it.

Common quick lube stations people will use around the country include Sears, Jiffy Lube, Meineke, Midas and Walmart.  You can also bring your car to a local mechanic, or you can even do the work yourself if you think you can handle the task.  There are plenty of manuals and Youtube videos dedicated to teaching people how to work on Nissans and how to change the oil in a Nissan.

Nissan Oil Change Coupons

There are really never any coupons dedicated just to oil changes for Nissans.  The only time you might find that is if you are looking for an oil change from a Nissan dealership’s maintenance department.  Otherwise, you should look around for coupons to locations that we listed above as well as any other car maintenance shops in your area.  You can usually get a conventional oil change pretty cheap, but if you want a synthetic oil change, you’ll have to pay a little more.

Soco Service center is open Monday-Saturday with shorter business hours on Saturday afternoons.

Walmart Oil Change Coupons

Walmart has been THE leader in low prices for pretty much any product that you can name.  They sell basically anything and everything in their stores.  They even have “Super” Walmarts that have a grocery store attached to the store that is already humongous.

Oil changes at Walmart are extremely convenient.  A large complaint among people who drop their car off for an oil change with most companies is that they have to sit around in a dirty waiting room for their car to be finished.  At Walmart, you can drop off your vehicle, do some of your regular shopping, then pick up your car in a half hour or so and pick up your car.

Walmart Oil Change Prices

As the leader in low prices and “rollback pricing”, you would expect that oil changes would be one of the cheap services that they would offer.  But, in reality, prices are not as competitive with Walmart oil changes compared to other local places like Sears or Valvoline Instant Oil Change.

Lots of people on the web complain about the higher prices of an oil change at Walmart.  They go out looking for oil change coupons for Walmart to get their prices down.

Walmart Coupon for Oil Change

Unfortunately, Walmart does not issue coupons for oil changes at this time.  If you want to get a cheap oil change at Walmart, you have two options.  First, you can wait for a sale and keep checking their weekly circular to find the discount.  Second, you can bring them a competitor coupon since Walmart matches lower prices and competitor coupons.  In order to use this, you have to make sure Walmart has the same exact motor oil and oil filter as they will only match the price of a service that is exactly the same.

Other Services

Besides oil changes, there are a few more car services that you can have done at Walmart Tire and Lube Express locations.  They can perform most of the smaller preventative maintenance for your car and all of them can install new tires that you either purchased from Walmart or brought in from another vendor.

Ford Oil Change

Ford engines have gone through so much change over the years.  If you were to put an original Model T Ford engine next to a new Mustang engine, you’d be baffled at how they got from point A to point B.  You can only imagine where we’ll be in another 100 years with automobile technology advancing even further.

Helping you figure out how to do a Ford oil change is difficult, since there are so many different models of Ford vehicles over the years.  Every decade there have been complete overhauls of how the engines are designed.  Usually, it is recommended that you find a mechanic or a local quick lube station like Jiffy Lube or Sears oil change location so that a trained auto technician can do the work for you.  You’ll find out that the price isn’t too much more when you have somebody else do the oil change rather than you buying all of the supplies to do it yourself.

Recommended Oil

Since there are so many different models of Ford’s, you should really consult your owners manual or Hayes automotive manual to find the recommended motor oil weight for your car.  Most Ford’s will be able to take the lower end weights, while some will require a more expensive blend.

As for conventional or synthetic motor oil, this will usually be up to you to decide on.  Older Fords would likely do better if you were to change the oil with high mileage or synthetic.  You can get by on conventional motor oil for most other that are 10 years old or less.

If you would like to ensure that your car is getting the best oil change possible, then you should definitely consider synthetic.   Synthetic motor oil is by far better than conventional.  If you live in colder climates, you’ll find out that your car will start up easier in the winter with synthetic and that your engine will run better in the cold.  This is just one of the many superior qualities that synthetic has over basic.

Mini Cooper Oil Change

A Mini Cooper is a smaller car with a very compact engine.  People that aren’t as familiar with the Mini Cooper’s engine should probably look for a quick lube station or a mechanic to do the work on their Mini Cooper so you don’t have to explore this engine by yourself.

The oil change itself is going to be similar to any other car.  You’ll start by prepping the car, getting it lifted, draining the old oil, swapping the oil filter and then adding the new motor oil to the engine.  These are very low cars, so be careful if you are doing the work yourself and driving your car up on lifts so that you don’t bottom out the vehicle on them.

Type of Oil for Mini Cooper

You should read your car’s owner’s manual, which you can usually find in your glove compartment, to find out what type of motor oil you should use in your car.  For the most part, it is recommended that you use 5W30 rated motor oil in your engine.  This is the recommended weight for most of them, although you might have a different model that requires a different type, so you should definitely look this up.

Synthetic vs. Conventional

You’re mechanic will most likely recommend synthetic motor oil for your Mini Cooper.  Synthetic is leagues better than basic or conventional motor oil, but your car can run perfectly fine with a conventional oil change.  Synthetic will require less frequent oil changes, less engine wear, easier start up and can work much better under extreme temperatures.  If you aren’t looking for a cheap oil change, then synthetic is the way to go.  It will usually cost about 3 times as much as conventional, but is definitely recommended for a Mini Cooper oil change.

Cost of the Oil Change

If you get a coupon for an oil change, the price will obviously drop a lot.  Most places that you go to get the work done, expect to pay about $30 for a conventional oil change and upwards of $70 for a synthetic oil change.  Coupons and temporary promotions can get these prices down a lot though, so keep an eye out.
